Keep Usable Goods Out of Landfills

To salvage reusable items that would otherwise end up in the landfill, SPU operates a program for self-haul customers on weekends at both Recycling & Disposal Stations.

Before reaching the unloading area, customers are asked if they have reusable items such as furniture, bicycles, garden tools or building materials including doors, windows, lumber, shelving, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, lighting fixtures and hardware.

Staff from SPU’s program partners—the ReStore, Earthwise, and Second Use identify items in good condition that should be set aside for possible reuse rather than being thrown away. As members of the Northwest Building Salvage Network, SPU’s partners collect and re-sell reusable building materials and vintage architectural pieces at retail outlets in Seattle.
