Event Recycling – About the Law
Washington’s Recycling Law requires beverage vendors at official gatherings and events to provide recycling for single-serving plastic, glass and aluminum containers. Event organizers are also responsible for monitoring and servicing recycling bins during events, and having the recycled items hauled to a Recycling & Disposal Station. Is my event covered by the law?
The law applies to events where authorization to hold the event is approved, recognized, or issued by a government, public body, or authority. This includes but is not limited to fairs, musical concerts, athletic games, festivals, tournaments, or any other formal or ceremonial event, during which beverages are sold by a vendor or vendors in single-use aluminum cans, glass bottles or plastic bottles.
Why is event recycling important?
Encouraging recycling at your event is not only good for the environment but also saves you money through lower garbage disposal costs. Recycling saves money on landfill costs and cuts down on energy and greenhouse gas use in manufacturing.
What is recycled at events?
Typically the following are collected: plastic bottles, aluminum cans, tin cans, glass bottles, cardboard, newspaper, and paper event programs/schedules.
What can’t be recycled?
The following items are not accepted in event recycling bins: plastic food containers, coffee cups, straws, cigarette packages, food, and animal waste.

How do I get started?
The size of your event will determine your course of action.
- • Large Events (> 500 attendees, large commercial festivals and events)
- • Small Events (< 500 attendees, small community gatherings).
