The best partners police officers have to fight crime are the well informed residents, business owners and neighbors who live in the areas they serve. Whether you are concerned about specific crime problems in your neighborhood or want to learn about better ways to prevent crime from happening, there are many ways to get involved. REPORT ALL CRIME and SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY Seattle has one of the highest rates in the nation of crime victims who report crimes, which greatly helps to get an accurate idea of crime trends. If you were a victim of any crime; even if it was small and happened a few months ago, we encourage you to report it. Use the non-emergency number (206) 625-5011, for crimes that are no longer in progress. Also by keeping an eye on your street, you are more likely to spot suspicious activity. By recognizing suspicious activity, you may be able to stop crime before it happens. Five different precincts are responsible for a different area of the city and the personnel at each have a good understanding of the local area and the crime problems specific to the area. There are a few ways to get involved with your precinct. Each precinct has an Advisory Council made up of citizens who help set the precinct priorities for fighting crime in the area. Each precinct also has at least one Crime Prevention Coordinator who can help advise you on other ways to get involved and crime prevention techniques to help your area. The South and Southwest precincts also have a program called Weed and Seed, which works with a steering committee made up of local residents. Weed and Seed provides grant funding with the mission to "weed" out violent crime while "seeding" the select areas through social and economic revitalization.
