City Hall Plaza site deemed successful by Pike Place Market farmers
First-ever satellite location exceeds expectations

SEATTLE – The Seattle City Council received a briefing today from James Haydu, Pike Place Market’s Communications and Marketing Director, reinforcing the successful results of its first year of a two-year pilot program to host a satellite Farmers’ Market once a week at City Hall Plaza.

“Pike Place Market Express at City Hall Plaza launched in June and was an immediate success for the farmers who sold there,” said Haydu. “Seattleites who work or live in the immediate area of City Hall were able to buy fresh local and organic produce every Tuesday, and that's a great thing for Washington families and farmers. We look forward to 2010.”

The satellite market opened for business each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning in mid-June and commencing at the end of September. Fourteen local farmers participated in the market, with sales and vendor participation exceeding expectations, according to Haydu.

“The success of the City Hall Farmers’ Market is a clear demonstration of how the Local Food Action Initiative can create economic opportunities for local farmers,” said Council President Richard Conlin. “I’m thrilled that one of our first efforts exceeded even our high expectations. Through the Initiative we will increase access to healthy foods for historically underserved communities.”

Pike Place Market Express at City Hall Plaza is expected to launch its second year on June 22, 2010.
