Report on Clean Seattle Initiative
Cleanup: Ballard
Date of Cleanup: July 22, 2006
On Saturday, June 22, 2006, Mayor Greg Nickels lead more
than fifty (50) volunteers as they greened and cleaned Bergen Place (Park),
the Ballard business district and the surrounding Ballard community. Organized
by the Department of Neighborhoods’ Coordinator Rob Mattson, participants
from the Viking Bank, Friends of Bergen Place, the Ballard Chamber of Commerce,
Quixote Foundation, Groundswell NW, and the Ballard Seaport Association
removed ivy, weeded, painted out graffiti, spread gravel, spread mulch,
swept, and picked up litter.
The Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Parks and Recreation,
Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Police Department,
the Department of Corrections and Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in
the effort. Anthony Harris took digital photographs.
Cleanup Activities:
- 138 streetlights repaired.
- Replaced 4 Garbage Cans at Marvin Gardens Park.
- Removed weeds & pruned Lavender plants from 3 large shrub beds,
generating over 50 pounds of debris.
- DOC Participation - Collected 600 lbs. of debris and assisted in weed
removal along planting strips.
- Street Cleaning crews placed 1 ton of asphalt mix for sidewalk shims
on 24th Ave NW btw NW 58th & NW 59th, St. and in alley south of NW
Market St. btw 24th Ave NW & Ballard Ave NW.
