Quick Tips For Lowering Your Power Bill

At Home
  • Keep your thermostat at 68 degrees during the day, 55 degrees at night and when no one is home.
  • Set your water heater to 120 degrees.
  • Run only full loads in your dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer (after 9 p.m. if possible).
  • Wash clothes in cold water.
  • Set your dishwasher to air dry.
  • Turn off lights when you leave the room.
  • Decide what you want to eat THEN open the refrigerator door.
  • Replace incandescent lights with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL's).
  • They use one-fourth the power and last ten times as long.
  • Turn off your computer, stereo, TV etc. when not in use.
  • Close off and don't heat unoccupied rooms.
  • Weatherstrip around doors, windows and anywhere you feel a draft.
  • Take short showers and install a low-flow shower head if you don't have one already.
  • Close fireplace dampers.
  • Keep pools and spas covered and the heat off or on low. Turn the heat up only when you plan to use them.

At Work
  • Turn off your computer, printer and other office equipment when you leave for the day.
  • Turn off overhead lights and use task lighting at your desk.
  • Set back the thermostat to 68 degrees during the day, 55 degrees at night and during non-business hours. Dress appropriately for your office temperature. Avoid using portable heaters.
  • Keep after hours lighting to the minimum necessary for maintenance and security.
