"Help with lighting -- a daunting subject for almost everyone -- is available at the Lighting Design Lab. It's a great resource and free, compliments of area utilities. Lighting Design Lab has specialists to help with commercial spaces. They can steer visitors to more energy-efficient lighting, lighting alternatives and other options. Tell them what's needed, they'll offer advice."
Seattle Post-Intelligencer, March 24, 1999
Seattle City Light was instrumental in setting up the Lighting Design Lab in 1989. Today, City Light operates the Lab with sponsorship from the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and electric utilities from throughout the Pacific Northwest.
The Lab provides technical assistance, training and education to commercial customers and lighting designers seeking information on high quality, energy efficient lighting technologies. Located in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, it is open weekdays from 8:00 to 5:00 and offers:
- product demonstrations, information and displays
- lighting consultation and recommendations
- a 1,200 square foot mock-up facility
- a daylighting lab, and
- classes on lighting strategies and technologies
The Lab also operates its own web site where you can take a virtual tour of the facility, view case studies, get lighting design tips, see examples of exciting projects, and explore other links and resources. You can view it at
