Project Summary
Located on North Capitol Hill, Bertschi School enrolls 220 students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. At Bertschi, students - the leaders of tomorrow - are prepared to carry a strong sense of stewardship and responsibility into the future. The new Bertschi Center will provide the foundation - literally - for teaching students about the importance of sustainable practices, and will offer a unique opportunity for student learning and involvement.

The visibility of the solar electric panels and accompanying energy meters will promote students' understanding of renewable energy sources. On a sunny day the 24 panel array will produce nearly 4000 watts of clean power. That is enough power for 18 desktop computers or lighting for five classrooms. The meter and inverter, located near the building entry, show the amount of energy being produced. The readout on the inverter also shows cumulative data such as pounds of CO2 saved by the solar array, as compared to energy produced by fossil fuels.
Given Bertschi's commitment to educating students about responsible global citizenship and environmental sustainability, the school leadership decided to seek LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification at the gold level for Bertschi Center, the school's newest building. Bertschi will be the first independent school in the Pacific Northwest to have a LEED certified building, and is proud to serve as a model for our peer schools.
When Brigitte Bertschi founded the school 30 years ago, it was for this purpose: to give young children a challenging and inclusive education with an emphasis on the whole child and on learning in a cooperative, community-centered environment. These precepts have remained the school's strong guiding principles.
