Housing First: A Solution to End Chronic Homelessness Housing First is an innovative approach to engage and rapidly house individuals who are homeless into permanent supportive housing then to provide intensive and flexible services to stabilize and support housing tenure. More ... Sound Families, a program to develop new housing with support services for homeless families, or families in danger of becoming homeless in Washington's King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, was made possible by a $40 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the program funded a portion of capital costs and a portion of service costs for the first five years of project operations. To be considered, applicants must have had experience in developing, owning and managing housing for families with children, as well as providing stabilization services for families in crisis. Existing nonprofit housing development agencies formed partnerships with service providers to propose housing with supportive services for families.
