In Seattle, piety has always taken a back
seat to business interests. In the 1920s "Big Bertha" found out the
hard way. Bertha K. Landes was the first female mayor of a large city. She ran on a
platform of REFORM with a capital Bible in it. The town was cleaned up and
only two years of reform got her voted out of office. The new mayor, Frank
Edwards, promised to refrain from reform. |
