Mayor Breaks Ground for Northgate South Lot Development
Water channel at Thornton Creek and mixed-use projects start

Seattle – This morning, Mayor Greg Nickels, City Council members, community leaders and the Northgate community celebrated the start of three major development projects on the large, paved lot immediately south of Northgate Mall. The three projects include the City of Seattle’s Channel at Thornton Creek, Thornton Place by Lorig Associates and Stellar Holdings, and the ERA Care Communities Living Center.

“What a difference 30 months makes,” said Nickels. “In 2003 it looked like this tired old lot, and Northgate, would never change. But, working together, the community has begun a cycle of renewal that will make Northgate a great place to work, play, live, shop, walk and hop a bus.”

The projects mark a significant breakthrough for development in the Northgate area. The south lot was at the center of controversy over creek day-lighting and as well as more general concerns about development. At the end of 2003, Nickels joined with City Council and Northgate leaders to begin a process for reviewing and supporting several important projects. The list included the south lot projects, the expansion of Northgate Mall and an area-wide transportation plan. The groundbreaking follows on the heels of the construction of the new Northgate library, park and community center, scheduled to open July 15. Improvements to 5th Avenue NE are also being completed at this time.

Seattle Public Utilities is leading the Channel at Thornton Creek, which will enhance Thornton Creek and provide 2.7 acres of valuable open space as well as art for the Northgate community. The design allows for year-round water flows through the channel, with higher flows during rainy weather.

Northwest of the channel, Lorig Associates and Stellar Holdings will build a large mixed-use development, including 109 condominiums, 278 apartments, retail and other commercial space, and a 16-screen cinema. On the southeast side of the channel, ERA Care will develop a senior living center with 129 units.

Completion of the south lot projects is scheduled for 2008.
